Weathered

Weathered

Our statues,
constructed
during the early age
of heroes,
are crumbling.
Repair them
with bubblegum,
and document them
in silly putty,
but they still wear
in the wind
and erode
in the falling droplets
of dark soda.
With the sun grinding down,
even though they fall
their shadows continue to grow.

-Robert L. Jackson III

  1. I can't help having my thoughts turn to the political process...indeed the statues are crumbling and the shadows growing. Sorry if I interpreted your words totally incorrectly...but it works. (Smiles)

  4. Repair them with bubblegum - both made me smile and also feel slightly adrift...i think we are indeed eroding our own history in a physical way - but the important things perhaps remain in our minds and can be relayed through words, image and well, ether waves

  8. I have to say that this works so much for me as a metaphor... especially those growing shadows. We seem to take better care of shadows than of heroes.

  9. Like you, I have recently lost many inspirational figures in my life....the sentiments here resonate. And, I love the imagery....especially, "erode
    in the falling droplets
    of dark soda." Brilliant :-)

  11. We grow up with heroes all around us then one day we see they are all normal, fallible just like us. Very good indeed.

  12. We forget and ignore the past at our own peril. We all make mistake but not to learn from others is a disaster. Here we are in the 21st century as foolish as ever as thosde shadows lengthen. Great words.

  14. A sombre reflection, which - unfortunately - seems to resonate with us all.
