Potential

Potential

Too easily
the head rolls
to the valleys,
below the wind,
to stick
in the bog,
unable to dodge
the eyes
glowing in the thickness.
But sometimes,
climb,
store energy,
see the world
above the fog,
and listen
to the languages
that we seek
but are not yet spoken.

Robert L. Jackson III

This was written for the Poets United blog midweek motif on energy.

  1. What a gorgeous photo - do you see that the crevices are shaped in the outline of trees? Amazing. I love the ponderings in your poem. Especially the seeking of languages not yet spoken.

  2. Wow, "sometimes" indeed. The fog of humanity sometimes makes me believe there is nothing else. But there is, and your poem points to it.

  3. see the world
    above the fog,
    and listen
    to the languages
    that we seek
    but are not yet spoken.

These lines particularly stuck with me.. such wisdom and depth here :)

  4. Yes, we definitely do need to climb sometimes. In the climbing is the energizing....and seeing the world above the fog makes it all worth while.

  8. love the short terse rhythm and the high/low contrasts - also makes the reader read several times - always the sign of a good poem
